Perfection and a Poem

PERFECTION

I had a vision as a little girl as to what life should be. It was only an idea in my mind of something I’d read or seen on TV. It wasn’t my reality, but my dream of perfection. I grew up with that idea surrounded by contradictions. Still, I felt I could make this vision appear.

As an adult, I worked on this idea. For a while, I thought I had obtained this perfection of what should be. Unfortunately, I found out this idea didn’t exist, while reality and lessons demanded my attention. I struggled with that and fought the very idea of it. What I came to realize was this was a battle I didn’t want to fight–or be a part of it.

I woke up to myself–my strengths and weaknesses. It was not a life where nothing bad happened, but good things happened along with the bad, too. As I continued on this journey, things continued to change. People grew and transformed. It wasn’t always easy, but it wasn’t as bad as it first seemed, either. What I found was the sun always rose and set, the season’s changed, and most importantly, there was love to treasure. This endless journey shows up in my writing and poetry.

To celebrate National Poetry Month here’s a poem from “Just her Poetry.” This shows how brief and beautiful moments are:

PERFECTION
Vibrant…
Beautiful…
Inviting…
Its fragrance welcomes you
Making everything around it
Dull in comparison.
It’s a splendor of—
Yellow, red, purple, white,
Orange, green, and blue.
It illuminates the world.
Delicate, yet strong.
It’s bathed in the sun
It’s nourished in rain
It’s supported by the earth
Hummingbirds are drawn to it
The bees create from it
Humans capture images of it
It’s nature’s art—a limited edition.
Soon, the colors fade.
They wither on the branches.
They carelessly drop to the ground.
They become the balance that creates…more.
But this beauty’s only temporary.
It’s all there is and all it gives.
It is beauty, nourishment, and aroma.
The flower’s gone as quickly as it appeared
But never completely forgotten
In a fleeting moment of petaled-perfection.

  1. I loved the poem, Denise, particularly the transition mid point. As you pointed out, the sun rises and sets, and we have to embrace that arc from one end of the spectrum to the other. A thoughtful and enlightening post!

    1. Thanks, Mae:) It certainly does go between light and dark but there is so much beauty in-between. I had this tucked away in my drafts and finally brought it out.

    1. Thank you, Balroop:) Yes, we certainly need to pay attention to what is around us.

  2. What you said about the way you envisioned life at a little girl resonated deeply with me. I spent SO much of my childhood in my own head, dreaming, imagining, pretending…And life never turns out the way you picture it to be. The lesson learned is to enjoy every moment of beauty along the way and come through the bad times stronger and more resilient. What a beautiful poem!! I am enjoying “Just Her Poetry” immensely! Review coming soon! Hugs!

    1. We sound like similar little girls! No it doesn’t turn out the way you think, but it has so much to offer still. There is so much beauty and those lesson do make us stronger:) It makes the start of my week to know you are enjoying the book. This week already has a mind of its own that includes sick a sick grand child, but there’s a ton of beauty within that. Thanks, Jan:)

  3. Beautiful post, Denise. From your prose to your poetry—I loved it all. I think as children we all have visions of what the future should be like. Eventually, our bubbles burst as we grow and learn about reality but it was fun while it lasted. 😘
Nevertheless, as you said, I’ll continue to embrace my inner child. Have a wonderful week, my friend! 💗xo

    1. Thank you, Vashti:) True that bubble does get burst and it was fun before that. That inner child hangs around and nudges us to see that beauty in the imperfection. Hope your week is fantastic, too!

  4. Beautiful poetry, Denise. I learned very early in life that the seasons could be trusted to return again. I trusted in that understanding before I learned how to trust people. Nature has never disappointed me. Perfection indeed.

    1. Thanks, Soooz:) Well put! Yes seasons always return and nature is always there in unexpected ways. That is comforting.

    1. Thanks Teagan:) I had the intro tucked away in my drafts for a while. I thought it was time to use it. Glad you enjoyed it and the poem! Hugs right bsck to you.

  5. Love this! So vivid, with vibran colors, and the fade away at the end. Nature has a way of showing off her perfection, and it’s up to us to appreciate it. I can’t wait until the spring flowers start blooming. It’s sad when they finish, but I try to enjoy them while they are around. Thank you for reminding us of Nature’s beauty!

    1. Thank you, Julie:) Those first blooms of spring are so magical. I’m sad to see them go, too. My lilac only has flowers for a week or two I wait all year for that.

  6. I also wondered why my parents and the other adults in the world of my childhood were not like Ward and June Cleaver. Perhaps you are right: perfection is a quick moment, which is how I understand your poem. I love the way you emphasize embracing the inner child.

    1. TV families did me no favor growing up. Yes its fleeting but not something anyone can keep going. Thank you Rob:)
