Thank you, Denise, for inviting me to your blog site today to talk about my new book, JAGGED FEATHERS! I appreciate your generosity.
I am a huge fan of Ernest Hemingway. He was such a brilliant writer, but he also possessed deep insight into certain aspects of life. I’ll never understand what drove him to commit suicide.
In Jagged Feathers, Nakina Bird keeps a Hemingway quote next to her computer, and it gives her hope for healing from her grief after losing her parents in a horrific accident.

She(Nakina) flashed on the Hemingway quote that was taped to the wall above her computer back home. The world breaks everyone, and afterward, some are strong at the broken places.
Finding the quote shortly after her parent’s death, she knew she had broken in places that would, by force, eventually be stronger. She wondered if it was the same for the soldier who had rescued her and so unselfishly and tenderly nursed her back to health.

I’ve given Hemingway’s words a lot of thought and find it them to be true. When my husband passed away, there is no question some part of me was broken. But when I started writing our story, piece by piece, the broken places began to mend and are now stronger than before. So, from a personal perspective, this quote is significant. Oh yes, that quote resonates with me. Broken places are very tough rivers, mountains, paths that you have to cross. If you refuse to cross the spots never heal and you never move farther.

I think at some point in our life, most of us will relate to that quote. I know I have.

The Japanese have turned the meaning of Hemingway’s quote into an art form. Kintsugi is fixing broken pottery with gold, making it not only more interesting and adding beauty, but making it more valuable. I believe it’s how God fixes us as life breaks us in many ways, making us stronger and more able to shed light to encourage others. It’s what you do, Jan, and so beautifully in your writing. Powerful quote, Jan. When my dad died suddenly, I felt like my heart literally ripped in two. It took a long time to get over that pain and see through to the other side with healing memories that strengthened our bond- even though he’s at that great fishing spot in the sky.

I’m sorry I missed this post. I love this story and was fully immersed in it on the first page. Jan was turned into a very gifted writer and has great instincts about what a story needs in order to bring out the emotion. Van and Nakina leaped off the page and into my heart. I’m very proud of her. She surpasses me in a lot of ways. 🙂

That is a great quote by Hemingway. I think people who survive very difficult times are stronger for it. Sometimes, with myself though, I overreact to things and I know it is due to the trauma of the home invasion I experienced and my sons many hospitalisations and operations. It’s as if there are triggers for anxiety.
