From Finn’s Forest #12 #writingcommunity #authors #writers #poetry #poem #snow #muse #sledding

Hi,

Poetry has been lacking in my life for several months, other than what I did for a project and to release my latest collection last fall. My focus has been on editing a book I wrote a few years ago during NaNoWri. This is finally coming together thanks to my critique partners. My Christmas collection, I hope to get to soon.

We’ll see when spring comes if my muse returns from her vacation.

In the meantime, I thought I’d write a poem to try to wake up my inner poet using a picture taken by my hubby during our last storm on the Magical Trail. Yes, that’s me sledding. Images or being in nature seem to inspire me— most of the time. So here goes:

riding the storm’s waves
as only a child can do
joy captures my heart

What do you do when your creativity takes a leave of absence?

NOTE: Watch for tomorrow’s post!

Let your inner child embrace all life’s seasons. D. L. Finn

  1. Great photo I love sledding and greatest joy as a child was an old tin tray down the slopes of a mound rather than a hill.. lovely poem Denise.. hugsx

    1. Thank you, Sally 🙂 A tin tray would work well. Many used old metal garbage can lids too. We had a nice mound for a couple of seasons. It worked so well for sledding and created some wonderful memories. Xo

  2. I miss the snow at times. We just don’t get enough.
I would only love it to share snowmen creations!

    1. Snowmen creations are fun. Although I’m less skilled at it than my family. The downside of snow is driving. I won’t anymore.

  3. Sledding is fun. However, I watched my daughter get into a sledding accident in Breckenridge Colorado. She was maybe six or seven years old. An adult man crash into her at a high speed. She flew up in the air and rotated like the wings of a windmill. It looked bad. Luckily she had no injuries.

    1. That would have been terrifying to watch, Thomas! I’m glad she was ok. We rarely sled in public because of that.

  4. Denise, a lovely photo and a wonderful poem to reflect the easy fun of childhood! Sledging is definitely one way to recover inspiration! I’ve learnt patience is important and not to try and force the creativity… letting it find me unexpectedly! 😀 Good luck bringing your next book to the finishing line!

    1. Thank you, Annika 🙂 That is a good way to describe sledding, easy fun! Well, except that climb up the hill… lol. Yes, patience is needed with creativity. Sometimes we just have to let go and it will find us again so true.

    1. Thank you, Kymber 🙂 It was good to get a bit of inspiration again from a joyful moment.

    1. Thanks, Priscilla 🙂 Yes, I think it helps to move to another outlet. Cooking is one for me too, but I can’t draw, well, only stick people.

    1. Thanks, Timothy 🙂 It was a good amount, and I can’t pass up a couple of runs on the hill.

  5. I love your poem! It brought back such good childhood memories for me. When my creativity takes a vacation, it’s time for me to get away from the computer and get out of the house.

    1. Thank you, Liz 🙂 I love when those good memories surface and bring us some joy. Yes, it’s time to walk away from the computer for sure when creativity disappears!

      1. That would do it, Colleen. I’m excited to hear you are working on that! For me, it’s just a case of burnout.

  6. What fun, Denise! When I need to stir my inner child, I like to disappear in nature. Kinda similar to you. 🤗

  7. HI Denise, I don’t think your creativity has deserted you. I think your brain is just very busy. I think I’ve told you that I can’t write a novel and produce poetry simultaneously. It’s one or the other.

    1. Thanks, Robbie 🙂 I have to agree my brain is very busy! I didn’t know that about you. It does make sense because it’s a different type of thinking that goes into a novel or poetry. Xo

  8. Ha! I love it that you went sledding. It really does wake up the child in us. I hope your muse is returning from her vacation. Have a wonderful week and Happy Editing!

    1. I only do a couple of runs, but enjoy every one of them! I definitely leave grinning. Fingers crossed my muse is wrapping up her travels soon. Thank you, Diana. I hope you have a great week, too, xo

  9. You look like you were having a blast in that photo, Denise. Definitely “as only a child can do.”
Wonderful poem and share. I haven’t been sledding in years, but would love to again sometime (another winter, as I want this one to be on the way out, LOL).

I’m kind of in a dry spell with writing myself, right now. I guess I need to woo my muse!

    1. It was, Mae 🙂 Once I get suited up to go outside, I’m ready. That’s the hard part for me. Yes, I’m definitely ready for spring. I enjoyed our mostly rain over snow this year. Our muses must need a vacation too. I hope they are having fun but ready to work soon.

  10. I haven’t been sleigh-riding in years, but I sure enjoyed it. Looks like you’re having a fantastic time, Denise! I usually read, watch movies, or exercise when the creative well is empty.

    1. It is fun, Teri 🙂 The ride down the hill makes me feel like a child again. All great things to do when our creativity takes a break!
