Here’s Colleen M. Chesebro’s WEEKLY TANKA TUESDAY POETRY CHALLENGE NO. 203.
I’m attempting something new, a renga poem based on the image below.
I borrowed Colleen’s explanation of this type of poem from her site.
A renga poem is a cooperative poem, written by two or more poets.
The first three lines, the hokku (haiku portion in 5/7/5), are written by Colleen.
The next two lines are mine. They are called the wakiku: two seven-syllable lines that connect with the interaction between the different links.

hazy reflections—
crows gather to remember
the gifts of summer
As winter slowly creeps in
Burying those sweet memories.
Denise, your wakiku is lovely. I felt the call of winter in this image too. Of course, the crows have their own mythology, but I always see them more in the winter in the southwest. I like this form. It’s really expressive and allows two viewpoints. Splendid! <3
Thanks Colleen. There was so many ways to go with such a wonderful image, but winter called out to me. We have a pair of ravens who have adopted our property. They keep me amused and love to follow our walks. They also get into our garbage if they can…lol. The crows do have their own mythology and I thought of that too. Glad I tried this it was fun going off an exisiting idea. xo
These renga are so fun. I love the collaboration between poets. 😍
i never thought of doing something like this. You are right it was fun.
Jules has a section on her blog where her and another poet did months of collaborative poetry together. It’s great fun. ❤️
This is lovely, Denise. Very well done.
Thank you, Robbie 🙂
What a fabulous idea. Great job Denise and Colleen and how well the two parts go together!
Yes, I agree. Colleen had a wonderful opener to work off and great idea to do this! Thanks, Marje:) xo

Thank you, Natalie:) Very pretty and easy to work off.
I didn’t know there’s some thing called “renga” or “wakiku”… I wondered if they are self-coined words! Nice collaboration Denise.
Thanks, Balroop. I didn’t know about this type of poetry before either. I’m really enjoying learning and trying new types of poetry:)
Absolutely beautiful, Denise!
Thank you, Miriam. It was fun doing a poem with Colleen:)
Yes, Denise, I used to do that every week for a while, but my time is running thin. ☺️
Yes, I understand finding the time to do everything we want is tough. xo
I did at least 2 posts a day in 2016, but it also changed when my husband retired at the end of that year!
Absolutely lovely Denise..♥
Thanks, Sally. I’m grateful Colleen does this!
I must get back to it in the New Year… It took some time out to finish the last project… but miss the weekly challenge..xx
That sounds like fun, Denise. I love collaborative poetry. It’s so interesting to see the different voices come together. Well done. 🙂
It really was a lot of fun to work off someone’s thoughts.
Bravo, Denise! Your wakiku blended seamlessly while still creating contrast to Colleen’s hokku. Together the two of you wrote a beautiful poem. Love it! I’m glad you gave it a try. <3 xo
Thank you, Vashti:) I’m glad I gave it a try too! Xo
