July Book Reviews! @gmplano @Sandra_Cox

Silverhills

by Sandra Cox

When Brandon hired a new trail hand to help herd the Longhorns to market, no one knew it was a woman. I loved the characters and relationships. They were well developed and progressed at a natural rate. The fatherly role of Cookie, Brandon, and Alexandria/Alex or the friendships Alex developed were my favorites. The mystery of why Alex was in this situation kept me intrigued, and there were a few twists I didn’t expect because of that. The setting was detailed and beautifully described. I could imagine being back on the Chisholm Trail or Brandon’s ranch in Texas. My love of animals appreciated Alex’s devotion to her horse, dog, and cattle. I adored this romantic western adventure and highly recommend it!

The Choice: the unexpected heroes

by Gwen M. Plano, Harmony Kent  (Editor)

I loved the first book, “The Contract” and was eagerly awaiting “The Choice.” The story continued where the first book left off with action, conspiracy, and romance weaved in just as skillfully. The characters are believable, and I found myself rooting for budding relationships. The theme of love winning over everything and personal sacrifice for the good of many balanced out the fear of greed and power. The details of life on a base added layers to the story, not only increased my knowledge but an appreciation of the research. Although it unnerved me how this plot could become a reality in the current political situation, it left me with hope, too. I recommend this well-written book but start with “The Contract” first, so you don’t miss out on anything! I look forward to the third installment.

UPDATES:

I hope you’ve been enjoying the RWISA tour as much as I have. I will post more this week and a very special edition blog from Sandra Cox, too.

I spent June reading, but not books I review. I consider it a break from reviewing when I don’t read Indie Authors, but I do rate the books. Here’s what I read: The Night Window (Jan Hawk #5) by Dean Koontz, The Law of Nines by Terry Goodkind, and Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman. All enjoyable reads and got four-stars from me for various reasons.

I will be out of town for a funeral at the end of this week. I’ll be checking in here on social media, but not as often as I normally do.

If I disappear for a few days it might be because our power company has promised to shut down the power “Public Safety Shutoff” if high winds kick up this summer. The prediction is outages could go on for up to five days at a time to prevent more fires. We have a generator, and I might get back online. I couldn’t last time we had an outage. See how this goes and pray we don’t have fires like last year.

Embrace your inner child this summer by reading a good book! D.L. Finn

Please give a warm welcome to fellow #RRBC #RWISA author, Gwen Plano and her newly released book, “The Choice, the unexpected heroes.” I’m very excited to have her here today!

The Choice by Gwen Plano

All the characters in THE CHOICE are fictional. However, one character mimics a real person within the Rave Reviews Book Club. Permission was granted to use his name and attempts were made to mirror his concerns and interests.

In the story, General Taylor telephones Ronald Yates and explains,

“Admiral Parker and I are investigating the murder of Brad Channing and Sarah O’Brien. The details of this remain classified, but I hope you can assist with one important component.”

His tone sounds reserved, “What might that be?”

“We need certain information to reach the public. If the networks receive it, they may distort and possibly bury it. So, we ask for your help. You were a journalist, and a good one. Do you know trustworthy news avenues? Independent sources who tell it as it is?”

Now he sounds eager, “This must be a hot story. Count me in. How many contacts do you need?”

“As many as you can provide.”

Ron offers the general a running list of sources and contacts. The admiral writes down the names. At the end of this, he explains, “When they report your findings, sir, it will only be a matter of minutes before the networks pick up the story. From that point, it will no longer be your own. So, it’s important you approach this strategically. You’ll have one chance to make your point.”

“We’ve assumed as much, but I appreciate the warning.”

“If I might ask, who’s the ‘we’?”

“A small team working on the case.”

“Some of the most powerful people on the planet own the networks.”

“Yes, we’re aware. Thank you for your help, Ron.”

“I’m glad I could be of service. Brad was a fine man. The full story behind his murder needs telling.”

General Taylor says his goodbyes and looks at the admiral.

“We’ve got our contact list. Let’s put our plan in place.”

End of Spring Book Reviews!

The Contract Between Heaven and Earth

By John W. Howell & Gwen M. Plano

“The Contract Between Heaven and Earth” is an action-packed thriller with a deeply spiritual side. The story starts off with a horrific event that involves children, but they were taken to a place of safety and peace–or Heaven. Watching them arrive are Peter and Teresa who share a special love. Then, an alert is sounded and soon the couple is sent to Earth with a contract to save humanity. They go into this agreement with no memory of who they were before becoming a human. Theresa is now Sarah in a bad domestic situation and surrounded by unsavory characters. Peter becomes Brad who finds himself in a war zone and on a long path to recovery. I love the strength of both characters and how they dealt with their new lives. Individually they were strong, but I love when they meet up through outside forces– and are immediately drawn to each other. This is a story that not only entertains and is exciting, but it also makes you think about coincidences. If you love a book with a lot of action, intrigue, a bit of romance, and thought provoking– this is the book for you. It is a perfect blend of insight and excitement that I highly recommend!

The Alternative

by Suzanne Burke (Author), Rich Bowden (Editor)

Ms. Burke wrote another amazing book of nine short stories. Each story had its own style of karma, which I thoroughly enjoyed. It would be hard to pick my favorite out of the bunch, so I won’t. There were parts where I found myself cheering out loud—other times cringing. The characters were well-written and the stories full of depth and emotion, along with some humor. If you love short stories with a dark twist, you won’t want to miss reading “The Alternative”.

The Master and the Maid: #1 in the Heaven’s Pond Trilogy (Heaven’s Pond Trilogy)

By Laura Libricz

“The Master and the Maid” is a historical fiction novel set in Germany in the 1600s. I was impressed with the research and the amount of details Ms. Libricz had in the story. I remember nothing of the thirty-year war, but I do remember the battle between the Catholics and Protestants. Greed and power is a theme that makes certain characters, like Ralf, do horrible things. This includes murder, land grabbing and accusing the main character, Katarina of being a witch. There’s a love story mixed in, but there is also the existence of a baby whose mother was brutally killed. Katarina is secretly handed this baby right after being betrayed by her lover, Willie, who sold her to pay off his debts to Herr Tucher. With Katarina just wanting to go home, she finds a new love blooming between her and her master. That relationship and the one with her adopted daughter are my favorite parts of the story. But, there is so much going on around them that surviving becomes more important. The ending answered some questions, but it also left many others unanswered for the next book–which I will be reading.

Watch for upcoming special edition blogs! You won’t want to miss them.

Next week I will reveal the cover for “The Button” and the monthly newsletter comes out!

Book Release: The Contract between heaven and earth #RRBC

I’m excited to welcome today’s guests John W. Howell and Gwen M. Plano who just released the amazing book: The Contract between heaven and earth. It received my highest five-star review!

The CONTRACT between heaven and earth

By John W. Howell & Gwen M. Plano

Thank you, Denise, for inviting us to join you today. We are so grateful to be featured on your blog and feel at home among your beautiful books. We love your message, “embrace your inner child.”

The Contract COVER FINAL 2-20-18

Available on Kindle and Paperback

Kindle priced at $0.99 for the introduction.

The CONTRACT is a different story for writers John W. Howell and Gwen M. Plano. For either of them, it is their first attempt at co-authorship. After a year of Hurricane Harvey and other challenges, they have created, what they have termed, an inspirational thriller that bridges heaven and earth.

Here is the blurb:

The earth is threatened with a catastrophic political event which could result in international warfare and destroy all life on the planet. In heaven, a divine council decides that extraordinary measures are essential. They call for an intervention that involves two souls returning to earth. The chosen two sign a contract that they will work to avert the disaster.

Brad Channing, a Navy SEAL, and Sarah O’Brien, a teacher, become heaven’s representatives on earth. The story follows them as they individually and then together face overwhelming obstacles and eventually end up on a strategic Air Force base in California. It is there that they discover a conspiracy to assassinate the President of the United States. The terrorists have a plan for global dominance, and they are determined to complete their mission. Although military leadership appears to have the President’s best interests at heart, it is not clear who can be trusted and who should be feared. The action is rough and tumble as Brad and Sarah try to figure out the culprits for the plot that will turn into a worldwide conflagration unless stopped.

If you enjoy thrillers, this is one with enough twists and adventure to keep you riveted and guessing. If you like your thriller along with a good romance, Brad and Sarah’s initial attraction and eventual love will sustain you as they live out their heavenly and earthly desires.

Trailer

Here is an excerpt.

Sarah didn’t know what to say. The room flickered with candlelight and the fireplace crackled with its flames, but the tenderness in Brad’s eyes warmed her heart the most. The evening had taken a turn she hadn’t expected but welcomed.

Sarah said, “I guess there’s a lot I don’t know about you, not the least of which is that you appreciate The Prophet. Do you write poetry?”

“My poetry isn’t worth sharing.” Brad shook his head. “I write it, but I keep it locked up in my desk. How about you?” Brad stared at Sarah intently, as if trying to read her soul.

“I, ah, I write very little poetry. You know, I don’t have any formal writing background, and I feel that handicap when I attempt to write poems. It has so many rules to follow, which I don’t know, and that makes me feel hesitant to even try. Sometimes, though, the moment demands a poem, and then I write.” Sarah smiled.

“I like that phrase, sometimes the moment demands a poem. Don’t you think this is one of those moments?” Brad reached across the table and placed his hand on hers. Though a simple act, it awakened a storm of emotions in Sarah. As much as she tried not to, her eyes welled with tears. She didn’t feel sad, not at all, but Brad’s gentleness brought her into her own vulnerable heart.
